Sunning Diapers

 I love sunning diapers! I think it shows my neighbors how green we really are! So the more and more I sunned my son's diapers as well as the diapers from our diaper service I realized that the sunning wasn't helping anything it was actually making things worse. So as I'm trying to figure out what is going on with my diapers turning YELLOW I attended the RDIA's (Real Diaper Industry Association) annual conference. At one of the sessions I was in, I mentioned the issues we were running into and I was shocked to find out that others (many others) had ran into the same issues. I was told a few months before to soak the hanging diapers daily so that the sun would be attracted to the stains, thus removing and whitening the diapers. What I didn't know was that our water is so hard (especially coming out of the hose) that there was high levels of iron in the water causing the dis-coloration. So for anyone that is sunning/washing your own diapers PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE get your water checked for the hardness. I have also just learned that the hardness in the water is causing my to use more detergent then needed. So it will be a win, win if you get this checked out! Another great trick I learned was to spray lemon juice directly onto the stain while the diaper is on the line sunning and the acid breaks up the stain and allows the good old sun to do its job!!! I have found that letting my 2 year old spray the diapers (with my help and supervision) is a great way to get him involved with helping out!!!
